“Les Monts Pyrenées, ou sont remarqués Les Passages de France en Espagne”. Engraved map, printed on 2 sheets joined, in outstanding original colour “Par le Sr. Sanson.. a Paris Chez H. Iaillot.. 1691”. With 2 splendid cartouches, of which the title-cartouche shows the sun above the coat-of-arms of France and Spain. Verso no text. (PM) 56 x 87 cm.
In contrast to the wording on the map not published by Hubert Jaillot in Paris, but by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam: The so called “contrefacon hollandaise! Here in first state, published in the first issue of Mortier’s “Jaillot-Atlas”, cf. Pastoureau Jail. I D, map 15. – An excellent copy in every respect, but outstanding in its splendid full original Dutch colour with rich gold-heightening! Tooley: “Copies for special clients were fully coloured and illumined with gold”, and referring to Sir George Fordham he adds that such examples are”the finest specimens extant of this decorative art”.
