Shirley 550. 1st state of the 4th plate of Jaillot's world map. Pastoureau, Jail. 1 D (1): “contrefacon hollandaise”. In fact the map was published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam and coloured in The Netherlands. - Outstanding copy in exceptionally fine early colour. The cartouches, borders and other features richly illuminated with gold. Full impression of the plate with wide margins. Few creases smoothened and some unobtrusive restoration to lower centrefold. Fine copy in the best imaginable original Dutch colour! Tooley, Maps and Map-makers 1970, p. 41, referring to the colours of Jaillot’s maps “In ordinary examples the maps themselves were coloured in outline and the cartouches left plain, but copies for special clients were fully coloured and illumined with gold. Sir George Fordham calls such examples “the finest specimens extant of this decorative art”. Our map is from an Atlas given to an ambassador as a present when leaving the Netherlands.
