Impression 55 x 90,5, sheetsize c. 62 x 94,5 cm.
Shirley 550. 1st state, engraved from the 4th plate of Jaillot's world map. In fact this map was engraved on behalf of Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam; cf. Pastoureau, Jail. 1 D (1), who calls it rightly a "contrefacon hollandaise". - Outstanding copy in exceptionally fine early colour. The map was not only engraved in the Netherlands, but also coloured by a Dutch artist. The cartouches, borders and other features are plated with real gold leaf. Excellent condition: Full impression of the plate with wide original margins. Few creases smoothened and some unobtrusive restoration to lower centrefold. All in all: A fine example in the best imaginable original Dutch colour of the late 17th century! Tooley, Maps and Map-makers 1970, p. 41, referring to the colouring of Jaillot's maps "In ordinary examples the maps themselves were coloured in outline and the cartouches left plain, but copies for special clients were fully coloured and illumined with gold. Sir George Fordham calls such examples "the finest specimens extant of this decorative art". Our map is from an Atlas given to an important ambassador as a present when leaving the Netherlands.
