Shirley 550, 1st state of his 4th Jaillot plate. Pastoureau, Jail. 1 D “contrefacon hollandaise” (1). In fact published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam. - Outstanding copy in exceptionally fine early colour. The cartouches, borders and other features richly illumined with gold. Full impression of the plate with wide margins. Few creases taken out and some unobtrusive restoration to lower centrefold. Fine copy in the best imaginable original colour! Tooley, Maps and Map-makers 1970, p. 41, referring to the colours of Jaillot’s maps “In ordinary examples the maps themselves were coloured in outline and the cartouches left plain, but copies for special clients were fully coloured and illumined with gold. Sir George Fordham calls such examples “the finest specimens extant of this decorative art”. Our map is from a copy given to an ambassador when leaving the Netherlands.
