Nr. 302: Tabula Terre Sanctae
Beschreibung:
"Tabula Terre Sanctae". "Modern" map of Palestine, oriented to the east. The Mediterranean shore line runs from Sidon to Gaza. Of the inland the whole of Palestine on both sides of the Jordan divided into the 12 Tribes is shown. Woodcut by/after Lorenz Fries (?), printed by Melchior & Gaspar Trechsel, Lyon 1535. 24,5 x 41,5.
Verso Latin text and page-No. 41. - This “modern” map - in contrast to the “old” Ptolemaic map – is based on the first “modern” depiction of Palestine by Vesconte-Sanuto in 1320. It is taken from the Ptolemy-atlas printed by the Trechsels at Lyon. The brothers Trechsel had acquired the woodcut from the heirs of Johannes Grüninger of Strasbourg. Cf. Pastoureau, Les Atlas Francais, Ptol. E 42; Laor, Maps of the Holy Land, # 612.
Fine, evenly printed impression. Wide original margins. Minimal restoration to centrefold. A short tear in right white margin (only) closed. On the left the strong woodcut-impression of the decoration on the verso is shining through slightly. Fine copy.
