Nr. 303: Terra Sancta

First state of Blaeu’s Palestine map

"Terra Sancta, quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis olim Palestina". The Holy Land oriented to the west. The map shows the whole of Palestine on both sides of the river Jordan, the Mediterranean shoreline running from Tripolis to beyond the Nile delta. The journey of the Jews from Egypt to the Promised Land is carefully depicted. The title-cartouche is flanked by Moses and Aaron. Engraved map, published by Willem Jansz. Blaeu, Amsterdam 1629/30. (PM) 38,5 x 50 cm.

First published state, with no text appearing on the back. – The map was drawn and (most probably) engraved by Jodocus Hondius jun., who died in 1629, before its publication. Blaeu bought the plate and replaced Hondius’ address by his own imprint. In this early state the map was sold as a single-sheet and in Blaeu’s 1630 Appendix only. Cf. Schilder, Monumenta Cartogr. Neerlandica vol. IV, map 61.1; Laor, Maps of the Holy Land, # 106.
Fine dark impression. Good original margins. The map was twice folded. Some minor restoration to folds and margins. Rare in this state.
