Nr. 522: Asia secunda pars terrae

Pegasus Asia
Beschreibung:

“Asia secunda pars terrae in forma Pegasir.”. Asia depicted as the flying horse Pegasus. Woodcut from Heinrich Buenting’s “Itinerarium sacrae scripturae”, printed by Paul Donat and published by Ambrosius Kirchner in Magdeburg, 1597. 25 x 35, 5 (plus head title and foot text).

Verso German explanatory text. – This odd, but extremely beautiful map shows in the horse’s corps, his wings and saddle-cloth the Asian regions and countries: The head shows Asia minor, throat and breast Syria and Palestine with Jerusalem as the horse’s heart, the forelegs Arabia, the hind legs the two Indias, the hind quarter “India Orientalis” and the tail the Chinese city of Quinzay (Hangzhou), which – according to the author - was the biggest city of his time.
Slight toning throughout due to the poor quality of paper. Very good and evenly printed impression. Upper and lower margins sufficiently wide, side margins cut close, the wind directions “Oriens” and “Occidens” in side margins outside the map being cut off. Some staining, mainly from handling.
