Map of the Japanese archipelago in original outline colour by Pierre Mariette, engraved by J. Somer and probably published by Nicolas Sanson, Paris 1676. Verso no text. (PM) 37,4 x 52,2 cm.
Hubbard-Walter OAG 31: Second state with some additions and corrections of place names from – according to Hubbard-Walter - “Cartes Générales de la Geographie ancienne et nouvelle”, published by N. Sanson, Paris 1676. But Pastoureau, Sanson V, does not mention a map of Japan being part of the “Cartes Générales..”. – Very good impression of the whole plate with wide original margins on laid paper with a big Fleur-de-Lis watermark. The title cartouche uncoloured. Guard removed, and a vertical crease taken out. In upper right margin manuscript-No.“101” by an old hand. Trifle staining. An excellent copy.
