Nr. 762: Amerique Meridionale

South-western sheet of Duval’s Carte du Monde
Beschreibung:

“Amerique Meridional”. Map of South America and the South Pacific with coastlines of parts of Australia and New Zeeland. The track of Le Maire’s voyage around South America to the Pacific is inserted. The title in the top left-hand section is embellished with an indigene warrior and a European settler. At bottom left is a panel “L’Amerique” containing the description of the American continent. Etched map with early outline and cartouche colour, published by Pierre du Val, Paris “1684”. Verso without text. 40,7 x 57 cm.

Pastoureau, Duval II, carte 61. Cf. Shirley, entry 489 and plate 356. – Bottom left-hand sheet of Duval’s large world map “Carte universelle du Monde” in 4 sheets on Mercator’s projection. Our map-sheet still has its own title and key which ought to be trimmed off when the four sheets were joined to form a single large map. – Full impression of the plate with margins. A tiny wormhole in lower centrefold, very light soiling at left-hand margin, otherwise a fine example of this rare map. The light toning of the back caused by former framing does not affect recto.
