Finely coloured engraved map, originally engraved by Jodocus Hondius around 1610, published by Thomas Basset and & Richard Chiswell, London 1676. Among the many embellishments are prospects of London and Edinburgh and an inset map of the Orkneys. (PM) 38,7 x 51,5 cm.
Shirley, British Isles 316. This map by Speed is generally based on Saxton for England and Wales, Hondius’ version of Ireland and on Mercator for Scotland. Verso English text. - Full impression on laid paper with wide original margins at all sides. Very light age-toning to the edges of the margins. Minor imperfections to lower margin not touching engraved surface. The fine colouring is old, but not original. A very good example of this decorative map.
