Nr. 523: Europa prima pars terrae
Beschreibung:
“Europa prima pars terrae in forma Virginis”. Europe depicted as a (sideways lying) queen. Woodcut from Heinrich Buenting’s “Itinerarium sacrae scripturae”, printed by Paul Donat and published by Ambrosius Kirchner in Magdeburg, 1597. 24 x 35, 7 (plus head title and foot note).
Van der Heijden, De oudste gedrukte kaarten van Europa, map 42. The map was published
for the first time in the 1587 edition of the Itinerarium. Our copy verso with German explanatory text. – This delightful map shows Europe by forming it to the shape of a queen with crown, mound and sceptre. The British Isles, the Scandinavian peninsula and most of the Mediterranean islands are shown outside the figure.
Slight browning throughout due to poor paper quality. Good, evenly printed impression. Upper and lower margins sufficiently wide, side margins cut close, the wind directions “Oriens” and “Occidens” outside the map being cut off. Staining in places from handling.
