Nr. 654: Rheni tricornis..Descriptio

Rare map of the course of the river Rhine
Beschreibung:

(Letterpress title) “Rheni tricornis et widi Nova et Germana Descriptio”. The course of the river Rhine from its sources to the mouth. Monumental map, engraved from 3 copper plates joined with 3 additional letterpress sheets affixed at bottom giving explanations in 3 different languages. Map 33 x 130, letterpress 10 x 130, overall sheet size 49 x 135 cm.

Cf. Klaus Stopp, Die Monumentalen Rheinlaufkarten aus der Blütezeit der Kartographie, map 5. The map was engraved and first published by Theodor de Bry from Liège at Frankfurt/M in 1594. Peter Overadt from Cologne bought de Bry’s plates in 1598 after de Bry had died. Overadt republished the map in about 1608. He changed the map only in so far as he added his name to de Bry’s in the cartouche; but new letterpress sheets were printed by him. - Fine and even impressions of the plates. Wide margins at all sides. Few imperfections by worming in French and German letterpress sheets with tiny losses of printed surface mended. In all an outstandingly well preserved copy of a very rare map!
