At the end of the 18th century Antonio Zatta and Giuseppe Antonio Remondini formed a partnership (the “Società Calcografica”) to promote a new atlas project. The maps were to be printed from existing plates, either in the possession of Zatta or Remondini, the last one being in the possession of the plates of Paolo and Francesco Santini. The project never resulted in the publication of an atlas. Only a quantity of maps were printed and sold separately or as composite collections. The Santini maps, which originate in the maps from Gilles Robert, were modernised by inserting new cartouches. For this purpose new small cartouche-plates were engraved by collaborators as Pasquali, Zuliani and Pitteri. From these plates the new cartouches were printed into the maps the old ones having been erased.
Our map has its origin in a Santini plate. The entirely new cartouche is printed from a separate new plate. Cf. Colomer I Preses II: 114 Var. IV. – Wide margins and over all excellent condition. Only in right margin four strengthened rents, of which 2 – at top and at bottom of the map – reach slightly into the engraved surface.
