Nr. 279: Vero dissegno del Lago di Geneva..

Scarce Bertelli map of Lake Geneva
Beschreibung:

"VERO DISSEGNO DEL LAGO DI GENEVA CON I LUOGHI CHEL CIRCONDANO. Luca Bertelli forme. Franco fece." Engraved map by Giacomo Franco, edited by Luca Bertelli, probably in Venice around 1580/90. (PM) 36, 3 x 47, 9 cm.

Luca Bertelli worked as an editor in Rome and Venice, but of G. Franco it is only known that he had a workshop in Venice. So our assumption is, that the map was edited in Venice. Our map is unknown to Tooley. But in Imago Mundi III he cites a similar one after Domenico Alfani by Giovanni Giacomo (Tooley 238). A copy of that map was offered by Christie's in the Feltrinelli-library sale on May the 20th 1998 (lot 993). Whether our map or the Giacomo-map is earlier we do not dare to say. But there are some differences between them. First, in the depiction on the right hand side of the maps. On our map some military activities are shown in that area, whereas the Giacomo-map does not show any of these details. Secondly, our map bears no dedication-cartouche.

The impression on laid paper is very fine with a lot of toning. Around the platemark are ample white margins, and there is a watermark, so far not identified. Only some strengthening to centre-fold, else a very well preserved copy of a scarce map.
