Beschreibung:

”Nova et Compendiosa Inclytae Urbis et Agri Bernensis Descriptio Geographica”. Map directed to the South of the former territory of Bern including the Vaud and of the canton of Fribourg with an inset view of the city of Bern in the lower right hand corner. The border of the map is composed of coat-of-arms of territorial towns and clouds with windheads indicating the compass points. Engraved map in finely executed old colour after Joseph Plepp, Bern “1638”. Sheet size ca. 41 x 59 cm.

Ryhiner Collection 3211: 24. – Cut around the pictorial borders and laid down on 18th century laid paper, to give the map ample white margins. Finely fully coloured, with the exception of the town view, probably by an 18th century illuminator, who thought his efforts worthy to add his manuscript initials “S.M. Illum.” to the lower left border of the mount. At back a large lithograph ex libris “Ex libris Henrici de Saussure” and an additional small handwritten sticker “de Saussure No. 38”. – A tiny part of the lower left pictorial border missing. The impression of the view a bit weak and by far not as good as the impression of the map. – A rare map in exceptionally fine old colour and with a remarkable provenance.
